INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team won their third-straight game with a 6-4 victory over IPFW on Saturday afternoon. Chris Maranto went 3-for-4 from the dish with two RBIs and Gunner Johnson came in to record his first win of the season on the mound for BU.
The bottom of the fifth inning was the decisive factor that separated the two teams. Butler scored five runs off three hits to earn the 6-4 win. IPFW's starting pitcher, Ryan Wells, lost his command and put three-straight Bulldogs on base. Drew Small was hit in the helmet on a 3-2 pitch while both Marcos Calderon and Michael Fries walked.
IPFW coach Bobby Pierce called for a pitching change with the bases loaded bringing Kevin Kimball to the mound in a tough situation. Kimball couldn't deliver as Chris Marras drove a single to right field that scored the first run of the inning.
Mike Kseniak picked up an RBI in the inning with an RBI single through the left side and Maranto broke the tie with a two RBI shot to center that scored Marras and Bartolone.
Neither team scored a run after the fifth inning due to great bullpen pitching from Gunner Johnson and Billy Laing. Connor Lawhead also did his part for IPFW limiting Butler to just five hits in the final three innings of action.
Johnson earned his first win of the year by tossing four solid innings in middle relief. He struck out five batters, while giving up two runs on four hits. Laing recorded his first save of the year by recording the final six outs of the game. The senior struck out three while only allowing one hit.
Butler and IPFW will end their three-game series tomorrow at Bishop Chatard H.S. The Bulldogs will look for the sweep at 1 p.m.
