Butler Holds off Seton Hall 7-6
INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team won the weekend series against Seton Hall with a 7-6 victory over the Pirates on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to build the lead and a three-inning appearance from senior reliever Billy Laing secured the win.
The top of the lineup was great for Butler on Sunday as Marcos Calderon, Chris Maranto and Will Amador all recorded two RBIs vs. the Pirates. Rounding out the RBI column was Michael Fries who gave the team an insurance run with a single to left.
The Bulldogs faced a three run deficit heading into the bottom of the third inning. They got on the scoreboard after an RBI single back up the middle of the field from Maranto.
The fourth inning led BU to victory as the 'Dogs scored five runs off three hits. Two costly errors were also recorded in the inning allowing Butler to take control of the action.
The two-out rally stayed alive after a fielding error by the SHU second baseman. Calderon made the Pirates pay with a two-RBI single that allowed Nick Bartolone and Mike Kseniak to score. Maranto's double down the left field line would follow Calderon allowing the lead to grow and the final two runs would come to home plate after a Will Amador single back up the middle of the diamond.
SHU chipped away at the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. A sacrifice fly allowed DJ Ruhlman to score and a wild pitch would move the game to 6-5.
Fries delivered his RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. The run came up huge as SHU scored in the top of the ninth to get within one run. The game ended with Laing getting Kyle Grimm to fly out to right field.
Eric Stout and Laing shared the mound for Butler on Sunday. Stout moved to 3-5 on the mound by tossing six full innings of ball. He struck out four and walked four before leaving the final three innings to Laing. The senior was impressive for BU down the stretch limiting the Pirates to just two hits. He struck out a game-high six batters.
Butler is now 2-1 in the BIG EAST conference and 14-17 overall. They will host the Ball State Cardinals on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
