WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Bulldogs were able to score eight runs in just five innings to defeat the Kalamazoo Hornets on Tuesday afternoon by the final score of 8-2. Heavy rain ended the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning and with a wet forecast setting in for the rest of the night, the two teams were forced to call the action.
Marco Caponi led the offensive charge with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate that included a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning. He ended the day with two RBIs and one run scored.
Additional Bulldogs to generate runs for BU included Quincy Quintero and Will Amador. Quintero went 1-for-1 with a run scored, two RBIs and a double. Amador was also in the scorebook with two RBIs off a base hit. In total, four Bulldogs came up with a double and five different players recorded at least one RBI.
The scoring output began in the first with Amador's two RBI single back up the middle of the diamond. The lead would jump to 3-0 with Caponi's solo shot and Nick Bartolone sent Quintero to the dish in the third off a ground out to second base.
The shutout ended in the fifth as Jeff Schank entered the game to give up two runs, highlighted by a double from Joey Aliotta. Butler would get those two runs back with scores from Michael Fries and Bartolone in the bottom of the fifth. The game would come to a close after Kseniak's at-bat with two runners left on base and just one out.
Peter Nyznyk chalked up the win on the mound for BU by tossing two perfect innings at the start of the game. He was replaced by Kyle Allen who limited the Hornets to just one hit during his two-inning outing.
Butler will be off this weekend as the team prepares for final exams, but they will return to the diamond with a road contest at Northern Kentucky on May 7.
