Indianapolis, Ind. - Senior outfielder Colin Ziegel hit an eighth inning grand slam to break open what had been a relatively close contest, as the Bulldogs rolled to a 12-2 victory over host Marian in both squads' season openers on Wednesday (Feb. 25) afternoon.
Ziegel finished with five RBI and two runs scored on two hits to help propel Butler to a win in its first game of the season.
A pair of two-out RBI hits by Ziegel and Kyle Schultz put the Bulldogs on the board first in the third inning. After drawing a one-out walk, Griffin Richeson moved to second on a passed ball and took third on fly-out before coming home for the first run of the game on a single to left by Ziegel. Schultz followed with shot to center that brought Ziegel all the way around from first.
Butler added to the margin in the sixth on a couple of unearned runs before getting an additional tally in the seventh after Schultz crossed home on a wild pitch.
Marian cut into the lead in their half of the seventh, as the Knights put runners on second and third with no one out before getting an RBI single and a sac fly to trim the gap to 5-2.
The Bulldogs would put the game all but out of reach in the following inning, however, as Ziegel's long ball capped a five-run eighth inning to put Butler in front, 10-2. Mike Hoscheit added a two-run double in the ninth to give Butler its final margin.
Ziegel finished with a 2-for-6 clip at the plate, while Schultz posted a 2-for-4 effort.
Butler returns to action this weekend when it faces host Evansville on Friday (Feb. 27) beginning at 6:00 p.m.
