Evansville, Ind. - A pair of big offensive innings late in the game by host Evansville proved to be too much for Butler to overcome, as the Bulldogs dropped a 10-1 contest to the Purple Aces on Friday (Feb. 27) evening in their first game of the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic at Braun Stadium.
The loss sends Butler to 1-1 on the season, while UE picks up its first victory of the year.
An early one-run lead by the Bulldogs would not be nearly enough in the end, as the Purple Aces would hold Butler to just four hits in the final eight innings to secure the win.
Evansville countered with a pair of RBI singles in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead in the game.
Right-hander Ryan Kruszka put up an admirable showing in his first start of the season, allowing just the two runs on six hits while striking out six before leaving after four with the Bulldogs trailing by one.
The margin would grow from there, however, as the Purple Aces plated three runs in their half of the fifth before putting the game away with a five-run seventh inning.
Butler returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 28) when it battles Eastern Illinois beginning at noon at Braun Stadium.
