Butler Defeats Austin Peay, 6-2
March 10, 2003
Junior Shane Winkler clubbed a three-run home run to spark a five-run rally and help lead Butler to a 6-2 victory over host Austin Peay in the final game of a four-game set at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville, Tenn. The victory gave the Bulldogs a split in the four-team series and lifted Butler to 3-4 on the season.
The Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the fourth inning. Paul Beck, Rex Eaton and Tim Marks opened the inning with consecutive singles to load the bases off of starting pitcher Matt Taylor. Senior Jared Lowe then delivered a two-run single through the left side to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead, and one out later, Winkler slammed a three-run shot to left field.
Freshman left-hander Craig Costello started for the Bulldogs and gave up just two runs in six innings, while picking up his first Butler win. He had six strikeouts and just one walk. Freshman Luke Behning pitched the final three innings and earned a save.
Beck led Butler's eight-hit attack with a pair of singles. Freshman Justin McKinley added a double for the Bulldogs.
