Righthander Kris Begley limited Butler to just one hit in seven innings of work while leading visiting Indiana Tech to a 9-3 victory in a non-league game at Bulldog Park on Wednesday (March 12). The setback was Butler's eighth straight to open the 2008 season.
Begley held the Bulldogs without a hit and allowed just three base runners through his first seven innings of work. He retired the first six Bulldogs he faced and pitched to the minimum number of batters through three innings. He left the game in the eighth inning with a 9-0 lead, after striking out seven Butler players and walking four.
Junior Alex Montagano finally ended Indiana Tech's bid for a no-hitter in the eighth inning by lining a single over the head of second baseman Shane Tirey. Montagano also broke up the shutout, when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Hart later in the inning.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the ninth inning on three consecutive walks, a fielder's choice by Rahdric Dix and an error on Indiana Tech shortstop Jason Ferens.
The visitors from Indiana Tech took control of the game with five runs on just two hits in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Will Richards provided the big blow with a towering, bases-loaded home run off of Butler relief pitcher David Dennemann.
Indiana Tech (5-4) added four more runs on an infield error, a couple of walks, a hit batter, and a two-run single in the seventh inning.
