Sophomore Jeff Brown pounded out five hits and recorded six runs batted in to help power Butler to a 14-3 victory over Illinois State at the Kennel Club Classic in Jacksonville, Fla., on Friday, March 12. One day later, the Bulldogs wrapped up their eight-game spring break trip with a 10-0 setback against UConn. The two-game split left Butler with a 2-6 record in Florida and a 4-9 overall mark.
Brown finished the Illinois State game with five consecutive hits, including a three-run, home run in his final at bat. He had a two-run single in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the seventh inning. The Butler infielder scored a pair of runs in the game.
Butler's recorded 19 hits against the Redbirds. Junior Dale Mueller had three hits in the game, including a double, while sophomore Brandon Tormoehlen added two hits and four RBI's. Seniors Matt Crews and Jason Freeman, junior Jason Combs and sophomore Mike Rosen each added two hits to the attack.
Sophomore Luke Behning pitched eight innings against the Redbirds and picked up his first win of the season.
The Bulldogs managed just four hits against UConn, while dropping their third game to the Huskies.
