Visiting Bradley used solid pitching and a 22-hit attack to hand Butler back-to-back, 7-1 losses in a non-league doubleheader at Bulldog Park on Sunday, April 4. The two losses, coming one day after Butler swept a doubleheader from St. Xavier, dropped the Bulldogs to 9-15 on the year, while Bradley improved to 15-6-1.
Junior right-handers Brian Spielmann and Josh Caruso combined to limit the Bulldogs to one run on four hits in the opener. Sophomore right-hander Collin Walker and senior right-hander Mike Jakubowski kept Butler to one run on eight hits in the nightcap.
The Braves exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 deadlock and claim the opener. The big inning spoiled a solid outing by Butler senior Tony Hornbach, who suffered his second loss in as many decisions this season. Bradley used five hits and a pair of Butler errors to compile the final inning rally.
Bradley grabbed a 1-0 lead off of Hornbach in the first inning, but the Bulldog tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by shortstop Jeff Brown. Caruso, who came on in relief of Spielmann in the sixth inning, picked up the victory for Bradley.
In the second game, Bradley jumped on Butler starter Luke Behning for five runs in five innings, and then added two more runs in the eighth inning off of relief pitcher Jon Olson. Butler tallied its lone run in the seven inning on a run-scoring single by first baseman Ryan Nance.
Behning suffered his fourth loss of the season, while Walker improved to 4-2 on the year.
Senior Justin Mckinley had three hits on the afternoon for the Bulldogs, while freshman Joe Dempsey added a pair of singles.
