Butler Rolls Past Anderson, 11-4, At Victory Field

Sophomore Matt Byzet pitched seven strong innings and Butler unleased an 18-hit attack to roll over Anderson, 11-4, in a non-league game at Victory Field in Indianapolis on Monday, April 4. The victory, Butler's third in a row, lifted the Bulldogs to 7-15 on the season, while Anderson dropped to 10-6.

Byzet was flawless through the first four innings, retiring 12 consecutive batters to start the game. He was nicked for a hit in the top of the fifth inning, but he retired the next three batters. The Butler right-hander added another shutout inning in the sixth, before surrendering a run in the top of the seventh frame. He left the game after the seventh inning, allowing just three hits and one run while chalking up eight strikeouts!

Butler jumped in front, 2-0, in the first inning on back-to-back triples by seniors Dale Mueller and Jonathan Day and a run-scoring single by Alex Rinearson. Mueller and Day made it 4-0 with run-scoring singles in the second inning.

The Bulldogs were blanked in the third, but then scored at least one run in each of their final five innings. Butler was ahead, 8-0, before Anderson stopped the shutout bid.

Mueller and Day each finished with four hits, while sophomore Tony Barnes added three hits. Eight different Bulldogs contributed hits to the offensive attack. Day had three runs batted in, while Mueller and catcher Brandon Tormoehlen each added a pair of RBI's. Shortstop Stephen Gill and Mueller each scored three runs.

Byzet picked up the win and climbed to 1-1 on the season. Freshman Bryan Bokowy pitched the final two innings for the Bulldogs. Starter Lee Evans (1-1), the first of six pitchers for Anderson, suffered the loss.

Butler will return to Bulldog Park for a single game against Earlham at 3 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, April 5.
