Butler Downs Wright State, 3-1, In Series Finale

Junior Tony Hornbach pitched seven shutout innings and Butler held on for a 3-1 victory over Wright State in the final game of a four-game Horizon League series at frigid Bulldog Park on Sunday, April 6. The Bulldogs swept all four games and climbed to 17-13 on the season and 4-0 in the Horizon League, while Wright State fell to 8-17 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Hornbach, making just his fourth career start, blanked the Raiders on five hits through the first seven innings of the nine-inning contest. He had seven strikeouts and three walks, and he survived runners in scoring position in each of his final five innings, while climbing to 2-0 on the year. Sophomore Mike Tomaszewski pitched the eighth inning and gave up one run on three hits, before sophomore Jon Olson came on in the ninth to stop the Raiders and pick up his first save of the season.

The Bulldogs ended a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Jeff Brown opened the inning with a single to right-center field. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and then scored the first run off of Wright State starter J. P. Jung on a single by sophomore Jason Freeman.

Butler scored a single run in the seventh inning on a single by catcher Tim Marks, a sacrifice bunt, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Paul Beck. Junior Matt Crews scored the Bulldogs' final run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Wright State ended 21 scoreless innings in the top of the eighth inning on a leadoff double by Pat Masters, a single by Bryan Vickers and a bad-hop single by Adam Morton.

Brown and Freeman each had two hits for the Bulldogs, while Vickers, Morton, Matt Barhorst and Chris Tuttle each posted two hits for Wright State. The Raiders had runners in scoring position in each of the final seven innings.
