Sophomore Dustin Bucalo had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Butler to a 7-6 victory over Marian in a non-league game at Bulldog Park on Tuesday, April 12. The victory lifted the Bulldogs to 10-18 on the season, while Marian fell to 17-11.
Bucalo ripped a two-out triple to right field to drive in sophomore Tony Barnes with the decisive run. Barnes had slugged a one-out double to right-center field. It was Bucalo's third hit of the contest and his third run batted in!
Junior left-hander Brian Smith, who entered the game in the eighth inning, retired all three batters that he faced in the ninth to earn his first victory of the season. Smith didn't allow a hit or a run in his two innings of work, and he fanned Marian's Trent Conn to end the game.
Marian scored first in the contest, notching a single run in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs answered with a two-run, home run by freshman Kyle McLaughlin in the bottom of the first. The visitors climbed back on top with two runs off of Butler starter Jay Kelty in the second inning, but the Bulldogs tied things up in the third with an unearned run.
Bucalo gave Butler a 4-3 lead with a run-scoring single in the fourth inning, and the two teams each scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Bucalo and catcher Brandon Tormoehlen each had a run batted in for the Bulldogs. Marian tied the game in the seventh on a solo home run by Reed Overstreet off of Butler relief pitcher Brian Deter.
The Bulldogs will continue their brief homestand on Wednesday, April 13, with a non-league game against Indiana State. That contest is slated to start at 3 p.m. (EST) at Bulldog Park.
