Butler Wins Non-League Game At Marian, 8-4
April 20, 2006
Senior Stephen Gill had three hits and sophomore Joe Pauley scored three runs to lead visiting Butler to an 8-4 victory over Marian in a non-league contest at Kaufman Field on Thursday evening (April 20). The win lifted Butler to 15-21 on the season, while Marian fell to 19-22.
The Bulldogs, who had 13 hits in the victory, scored all eight runs off of Marian starter Tanner Freeman in the first four innings. Butler tallied solo runs in the first and second innings, and three runs each in the third and fourth frames.
Pauley had a one-out double in the first inning and later scored on a single to rightfield by freshman Kyle Cox. Gill led off the second inning with a triple and came home on a single by freshman Joel Matheny.
The third inning rally started with a walk to Pauley and with two outs, Gill reached on a bunt single. Senior Jeff Brown singled to score Pauley, and then Gill and Brown each advanced a base on a fielding error by leftfielder Derek Mailikian. Sophomore Alex Rinearson plated both runs with a double to deep centerfield.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fourth frame on a run-scoring single by Cox and a two-run throwing error by third baseman Cody Andrew.
Senior lefthander Craig Costello started for the Bulldogs and blanked the Knights for two innings, before surrendering a pair of runs on three hits in the third inning. He was lifted in favor of freshman righthander Ryan Kruszka after giving up a third run in the fourth inning. Kruszka (3-2) threw two scoreless innings, before being nicked for a single run in the seventh frame, and he picked up the win. Freshman Matt Sokolowski blanked the Knights over the final two innings.
Gill finished with a single, double and triple in five official trips to the plate, while Pauley was two for three with the three runs scored. Cox and Brown each added two hits to the Butler attack.
The Bulldogs will return to Horizon League play with a doubleheader against UIC on Saturday, April 22. That twinbill at Bulldog Park will start at 12 noon.
