Busy Week For Former Butler Basketball Players

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Basketball action is fairly quiet at Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse in early July, but that's not the case for a quartet of former Butler basketball standouts.  Summer League play, mini-camps and Olympic preparations are on the front-burner for former Bulldogs Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack, Matt Howard and Mike Green.

Hayward is a member of the 2012 USA Basketball Select team, and he's training against the 2012 USA Basketball Men's National Team, July 6-13, in Las Vegas, Nev., to aid the national team's preparation for the upcoming Olympics.  Hayward, who helped Butler to the 2010 NCAA national championship game, is one of nine players on the Select team with prior USA Basketball experience.

Mack, who was a member of Butler's 2010 and 2011 Final Four teams, recently completed his rookie season with the Washington Wizards.  He's one of 14 players participating in the Wizards' summer Mini-Camp, which runs July 9-12.  Mack averaged 3.6 points in 64 games with the Wizards last season.

Howard, also a member of Butler's 2010 and 2011 Final Four teams, is playing with the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.  He's already had a busy summer at mini-camps for the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, and he had another workout planned with the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Howard played in Europe last year with Olympiacos in Greece and EnBW Ludwigsburg in Germany, where he averaged 12.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in 13 games.

Green, who was a top performer on Butler's 2006-07 and 2007-08 NCAA Tournament teams, is playing for the Utah Jazz in the Orlando Pro Summer League, July 9-13.  Green previously played for the Philadelphia 76ers in the Orlando summer league and for the Portland Trailblazers in the NBA Summer League.  He spent 2011-12 with Sigma Barcellona of the Italian League.
