Butler sophomore guard Alex Barlow's game-winning floater in overtime vs. then-No. 1 Indiana on Dec. 15 is nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced recently. Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college basketball plays will be nominated as the GEICO Play of the Year. Each week's winner will be determined by fan voting through the official Facebook page (facebook.com/BestofCollegeBasketball). The eight finalists will compete in a week-long competition to determine the GEICO Play of the Year. The winner will be announced during the GEICO Best of College Basketball special which airs April 6 on CBS.
In addition to recognizing the season's top plays, the one-hour CBS special will relive the season's greatest moments, players and traditions. The show reviews the GEICO Best of 2013 Basketball Tour, an interactive fan experience that visits 10 marquee games throughout the basketball season.
The dramatic shot by the unlikely hero, a walk-on guard from Springboro, Ohio, gave Butler its first victory in five tries against a No. 1-ranked team. The shot by Barlow fell through the net with 0:02.6 left. A desperation shot by Indiana's Jordan Hulls from just inside the halfcourt stripe came up short, and Butler's fans celebrated yet another magical moment for the Bulldogs.
Barlow's game-winning bucket is competing against three other plays from week one, including a tough banked-in game-winning layup by Arizona's Mark Lyons, an acrobatic layup plus the foul by Illinois' Brandon Paul and a half-court miracle shot by Georgia State's Rashaad Richardson.
Voting ends Monday, Jan. 21, at 11:59 A.M. ET.
