Alex Barlow Named Capital One Academic All-District
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler junior Alex Barlow, who has started all 21 Butler games this season, has been named to the five-player 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District V men's basketball team, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). His selection to the All-District squad makes him a candidate for the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America Team.
Barlow currently leads the Bulldogs in assists (3.5) and steals (1.95), and he stands third on the team in minutes played (30.7). He ranks third in the BIG EAST and 20th in the NCAA Division I in assist/turnover ratio (2.9), and he ranks second in the conference in steals. The 5-11 point-guard, who's averaging 5.9 points per game, was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll earlier this season after scoring a career-high 16 points and adding eight rebounds and four steals in Butler's victory at Evansville.
A finance major from Springboro, Ohio, Barlow helped Butler to a 27-9 record and the third round of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship a year ago. He gained national recognition when he hit a short lay-up with 0:02.6 remaining in overtime to lift Butler past No. 1-ranked Indiana. His game-winning shot was a finalist for the Geico Play of the Year.
Joining Barlow on this year's Capital One Academic All-District V Team were Aaron Craft of Ohio State, Drew Crawford of Northwestern, Kendrick Perry of Youngstown State and Dave Sobolewski of Northwestern.
To be considered for Academic All-District and Academic All-America recognition, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games. No student-athlete is eligible until he has completed one full calendar year at his current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
The honorees from District V, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, will be considered with Academic All-District picks from seven other districts for Academic All-America selection, which will be released in February.
