Senior Darnell Archey hit five three-point field goals and scored a game-high 15 points to lead Butler to a season-opening, 69-53, victory over IPFW at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne on Friday, Nov. 22. It marked the second straight year that the Bulldogs opened the season with a double-figure win away from Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Archey hit his first three-point field goal while helping the Bulldogs open the game with a 15-3 scoring run. Five different Bulldogs scored during the run, paced by four points from junior forward Duane Lightfoot, Jr. The opening flurry gave the Bulldogs the lead for good, though IPFW (0-4) did close to within four points, 23-19, late in the first half.
Butler stretched its lead to 16 at 47-31 eight minutes into the second half and led by twin digits for the rest of the contest. The Bulldogs' biggest lead was 23 points, 69-46, with just over a minute remaining, before the Mastodons scored the final seven points of the game. Archey his three three-point field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Senior Lewis Curry, getting his first collegiate start in his hometown, added a career-high 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Lightfoot came off the bench with a career-high 12 points. Senior Brandon Miller, Butler's top returning scorer from last year's 26-6 club, chipped in with 11 points, seven assists and four steals.
Butler hit 10 three-pointers in the contest and finished with 22 assists on 27 total baskets. The Bulldogs shot .509 from the field for the game.
The Bulldogs return to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a pair of games in the next week. Butler will host Wayne State on Tuesday, Nov. 26, and then face Ball State on Saturday, Nov. 30. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
