Senior Duane Lightfoot and sophomore Avery Sheets each scored 12 points to lead a balanced Butler squad to a 68-54 victory over Quincy in a non-league game at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Sunday, Nov. 23. It was the season-opener for the Bulldogs, while Quincy fell to 2-1 on the year.
Lightfoot put the Bulldogs ahead for good with a dunk that made the score 8-7 six minutes into the contest. His basket sparked a 12-1 Butler scoring run that gave the Bulldogs a 10-point lead. The Bulldogs stretched the lead over the visiting NCAA Division II Hawks to as many as 13 points late in the first half and maintained a double-figures advantage throughout most of the second half.
Sheets, making his first collegiate start, scored eight of his 12 points in the first half. He hit a pair of three-point field goals and finished with three assists in the contest. Junior James Parker came off the bench with 11 points and sophomore Jeff James, also making his first collegiate start, finished with a career-high 10 points.
Senior Mike Monserez scored just two points in the contest, but he led both teams in rebounding with 10 and matched his career-high for assists with nine.
Forward Cory Cummens led the Hawks in scoring with 23 points.
The Bulldogs will travel to the University of Northern Iowa on Tuesday, Nov. 25, for their first road contest of 2003-04.
