Four Butler players scored in double figures as the Butler men's basketball team defeated Evansville 65-64 on Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 3-2, while Evansville remains winless at 0-4.
After being down 32-25, Butler went on a 20-4 run early in the second half to take a 53-47 lead with 7:35 remaining. Evansville would tie the game 53-53 on a Clint Cuffle three-pointer and then would take its final lead of the game, 55-53, with a pair of free throws from Matt Webster.
"They shot so well in the first half and we had to respond," said Butler head coach Todd Lickliter. "I like the way we competed. We met the challenge."
Despite shooting just 53 percent (14-26) from the line and 29 percent (7-24) from long range, the Bulldogs managed to hold on for the win. Evansville was plagued by 19 turnovers, but outrebounded Butler 31-26. The Aces shot 48 percent (24-50) from the field for the game including a 56 percent (9-16) clip from three-point range.
Senior Mike Monserez led all players with 17 points while pulling down a team high five rebounds and five assists. Avery Sheets (14), Duane Lightfoot (13), and Bruce Horan (12) also scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Andre Burton led the Aces with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Cuffle added 13 points and a game high nine rebounds. The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, December 10, at Bradley.
