Sophomore Matt Howard, one of the top performers on Butler's nationally-ranked men's basketball team, has received a pair of honors recognizing his academic achievement. The 6-8 forward was one of five players named first team on the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V team, and he was honored by the Horizon League as the Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January.
Howard, Butler's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, was joined on the Academic All-District team by Jason Holsinger of Evansville, Mike Schachtner of Green Bay, Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois and David DuBois of Western Illinois. District V includes Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba. The five honorees, along with first team selections from seven other districts, will be considered for Academic All-America recognition.
Howard also became the first Butler athlete to be named Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month. He earned the honor by helping lead the Bulldogs to a perfect 8-0 record and a "Top 25" national ranking during the January. The Connersville native averaged 12.5 points and 6.6 rebounds, while shooting .62% during the month. He had high games of 18 points in Butler's win at Loyola and 11 rebounds twice.
An honor student majoring in finance, Howard has been named Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week three times this season.
