Senior Julian Betko, who helped the Butler men's basketball team capture an outright league regular season championship, has been named U. S. Army Horizon League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week (March 4). Women's basketball player Launa Hochstetler of Valparaiso was selected as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Betko led Butler to a 66-61 victory over Wright State on Thursday (Feb. 28) with a career-high 17 points, giving the Bulldogs outright possession of the Horizon League regular season championship. He hit a career-best five three-point field goals in the game, and scored all 17 of his points in a 14-minute stint in the first half. The 6-6 guard then closed out the week by helping Butler defeat Detroit, 65-31, in the final regular season game for both teams.
A graduate student with a 3.6 grade point average in Butler's MBA program, Betko is a two-time first team Horizon League All-Academic pick. He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing last year.
Betko and his teammates will begin play in the Horizon League Tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. The Bulldogs (27-3) will face the winner of Friday night's game between UIC and Loyola.
