A. J. Graves Opens Practice At The Indianapolis 500

May 8, 2007

Butler junior guard A. J. Graves traded his jump shot for a jump start and waved the green flag to start practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday, May 8. The leading scorer on Butler's successful basketball team last season, Graves was selected to be the honorary starter for the first official day of practice at the Brickyard oval.

Graves was given a tour of the legendary facility prior to the start of the noon practice session. He was able to meet several of the drivers, including Butler graduate Ed Carpenter and another A. J. - A. J. Foyt IV. He also took two laps around the Speedway track in the Official Pace Car.

At 12 noon, Graves waved the green flag to start the first full practice session of the 91st Indianapolis 500.

Graves is finishing off a school-year that saw him help the Butler men's basketball team to a 29-7 record, a championship in the NIT Season Tip-Off and a trip to the NCAA Division I Sweet 16. He was named MVP of the NIT Season Tip-Off, earned honorable mention All-America recognition and was named a first team Academic All-American.
