Butler forward Gordon Hayward has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 22-28. The 6-8 freshman, who helped the Bulldogs to a road victory at #14/12 Xavier, earned the league's weekly honor for the second time in two weeks.
Hayward recorded his first collegiate double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in Butler's 74-65 victory over Xavier in the Cintas Center two days before Christmas. He hit four of 10 shots in the game, including one from the three-point arc, and a career-high 10 of 10 from the free throw line.
The talented first-year player also posted a career-high four blocked shots in the game, and he added a career-high three steals. He had one assist and no turnovers, while matching his career-high with 38 minutes played.
The victory was Butler's first over a nationally-ranked opponent since March of 2007, when the Bulldogs defeated #18 Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. And it was Butler's first on a nationally-ranked opponent's homecourt since December of 2001, when the Bulldogs knocked off #21 Ball State.
Hayward leads all Horizon League freshmen in seven statistical categories - scoring (13.2 ppg), rebounding (5.7 rpg), steals (1.6 spg), blocked shots (1.0 bpg), field goal percentage (.489), three-point field goal percentage (.462) and three-point field goals made per game (2.2). He second to teammate Shelvin Mack (.871) in free throw shooting (.786).
Earlier this month, Hayward was named Horizon League Player of the Week after helping Butler to a road victory at Bradley and a near-upset of #21 Ohio State.
Butler (10-1) will close out the 2008 portion of its 2008-09 schedule against UAB in Hinkle Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m.
