Butler Falls In Florida

Quarterback Josh McGregor passed for three touchdowns to lead Jacksonville to a 36-7 victory over visiting Butler in a Pioneer Football League game at D. B. Milne Field on Saturday (Nov. 14).  The loss snapped Butler’s nine-game winning streak and spoiled the Bulldogs’ perfect season.

McGregor threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Christopher Kuck midway through the second quarter to tie the game and then hit Josh Philpart with a 42-yard strike right before halftime to give the Dolphins the lead for good.  He hit Kuck with a two-yard touchdown pass midway through the third period.

Butler (9-1, 6-1 PFL) jumped in front in the second quarter on a seven-yard Andrew Huck to Dan Bohrer touchdown pass.  The play capped a 67-yard, 11-play drive.  It was Bohrer’s seventh touchdown catch of the season, and it boosted his Butler career record for TD catches to 22.

The Bulldogs’ lead lasted less than a minute, before McGregor unloaded a 44-yard pass to Larry Thompson and then found Kuck with the 10-yard touchdown pass.  The Dolphins (6-4, 5-2 PFL) kept Butler out of the end zone for the rest of the game.

Rudell Small, who rushed for a game-high 103 yards on 18 carries, scored on a 54-yar touchdown run with 1:02 left in the third quarter, and Brian Valdez returned a pass interception for 42 yards and a touchdown 20 seconds later for the final score.

Huck completed 21 of 35 passes in the game for 220 yards, but he threw two interceptions and he was sacked twice.  Zach Watkins led Butler’s receivers with eight catches for 96 yards, while Scott Gray led Butler’s rushing attack with 87 yards on 19 attempts.

Linebacker Derek Guggenberger paced Butler’s defense with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss.

The Bulldogs, seeking their first PFL championship since 1994, will play their final regular season game on Saturday, Nov. 21, at home against Drake.  Both teams are tied, along with Dayton, for first place in the PFL.  Gametime at the Butler Bowl will be 1 p.m.
