Sept. 18, 2004
Freshman quarterback Brian Yost threw two touchdown passes to lead host Morehead State to a 15-7 victory over visiting Butler in a Pioneer Football League interdivisional game at Jayne Stadium on Saturday night (Sept. 18). It was the first victory in three outings for the Eagles, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-3.
Yost, getting his second collegiate start, capitalized on a pair of Butler mistakes to engineer Morehead State's two scoring drives. His first touchdown pass, an eight-yard strike to running back Casey McCoy, capped off a 35-yard march that was started by a bad snap on a Butler punt attempt. The Eagles had their own bad snap on the extra point kick attempt, but holder Daniel Vagni grabbed the ball and threw a two-point conversion pass to James Spencer-Howell.
The Eagles added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter, when Butler's Justin Campbell fumbled on the Bulldogs' eight-yard line. Yost finished the short drive with his second eight-yard touchdown pass to McCoy.
Butler jumped in front, 7-0, in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ian Nelson to running back Billy Nardini. The extra point kick attempt by Eric Neumeier made it 7-0, and it looked like that would be the halftime score. But the Bulldogs were unable to pick up a first down with just over a minute remaining in the first half and were forced to punt from deep in their own territory. The snap back to punter Bob Farmer hit the ground and Farmer managed just a short punt to the Butler 35-yard line, setting up Morehead State's first score.
Morehead State set the stage for its final touchdown with a punt to the Butler one-half yard line. Campbell broke through the middle on Butler's first play, but the ball popped loose and Morehead State recovered at the Butler eight-yard line.
Nelson finished the game with 20 completions in 31 attempts for 170 yards, but he was intercepted twice. The Bulldogs also lost two fumbles in the contest. Campbell led Butler's ground attack with 50 yards on 16 carries, while Phil Christner and Mike Jasinski each finished with five pass receptions. Senior linebacker Jim Hart paced a solid defensive effort by the Bulldogs with 10 tackles.
Yost led the Eagles with 106 passing yards (9-21-1) and 67 yards on 14 rushing attempts.
