Senior tailback Cliff Sachini rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Dayton to a 40-0 victory over Butler in a rain-soaked game at the Butler Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 25. The victory boosted the defending champ Flyers to 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in Pioneer Football League play, while Butler fell to 0-8 on the season and 0-2 in league action.
Sachini scored a pair of first half touchdowns to help the Flyers to a 21-0 halftime lead. He opened the game's scoring with a nine-yard run less than four minutes into the contest, and then he added a five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The senior tailback ended his afternoon with a 22-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Dayton, the top rushing team in the PFL, picked up 335 yards on the ground. Fullback Geno Mattioda chipped in with 94 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Butler had its best scoring opportunity early in the second quarter, when freshman quarterback Ryan Diggins led the team on an eight-play, 44-yard march to the Dayton five-yard line. But tailback Justin Campbell fumbled on a third down play and Dayton recovered on its own six-yard line.
Diggins, getting his first collegiate start, completed 10 of 19 passes for 75 yards in the contest. Campbell finished with 41 rushing yards on 17 carries, and he added 140 yards on five kickoff returns. Wide receiver Bob Leonard had three catches for a team-high 46 yards.
The Bulldogs will visit San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 1, for their final road game of the 2003 season. Butler will return to the Butler Bowl for its final two games, beginning with a Nov. 8 game against Valparaiso.
