Bulldogs Tie For Seventh At Cleveland State Invitational
Butler turned in a strong second-round performance and wound up
tied for seventh place in the final team standings at the
rain-shortened Telich/Sunlife Financial Invitational, hosted by
Cleveland State on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 28-29). Malone
College captured the captured the championship in the 12-team
event.
Four Bulldogs shot 78 or better in the second round to help Butler
post a team score of 307. That tied for the third-lowest
second round total and lifted the Bulldogs, who entered the second
day in 10th place after posting an opening-round 321. The
tournament was called after the second round because of rain.
Senior Kyle Thomas paced the Bulldogs and wound up
tied for 13th overall with rounds of 76 and 78 on the Sand Ridge
Golf Club layout. He was the lone Butler player to break 80
in both rounds.
Freshman Colin Reenan carded rounds of 82 and 76
and tied for 30th, while freshman Andrew Wegeng
tied for 40th with rounds of 83 and 78. Sophomore Ben
Nichele tied for 44th with scores of 80 and 82 to round
out the Bulldogs’ top four scorers. Freshman
Matt Vogt, who followed an opening-round 89 with a
75 for Butler’s best single round, tied for 51st, and junior
Ryan Wegeng, playing as a non-scoring individual,
tied for 38th with rounds of 81 and 79.
Butler’s two-day total of 628 left the Bulldogs tied with
North Dakota in the final team standings. Malone posted a
team score of 598, the lone team to break 600. Justin Lower
of Malone captured medalist honors with a 71 in the opening round
and a 77 in the second round.
