Bulldogs Finish Third At Butler Invitational
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Three Bulldogs placed among the “Top
15” individuals and Butler finished third in the team
competition at the 54-hole Butler Fall Invitational men’s
golf tournament, which wrapped up at Eagle Creek Golf Course on
Tuesday, Oct. 5. Evansville claimed the team title with a
sizzling, 10-under-par 242.
Sophomore Andrew Wegeng paced Butler with a three-round score of
two-over-par 215. He shot an even-par 71 in the first round,
a one-under-par 70 in the second round and a 74 in the final round
to claim seventh place in the final individual standings. He
had one of two sub-par rounds for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Matt Vitale was the other Butler player to break par
during the tournament. He shot a one-under-par 70 in the
opening round and then followed with rounds of 73 and 74 for a 217
total and a tie for tenth place. Senior Ryan Wegeng was close
behind with a 54-hole total of 218 and a tie for 12th place.
He carded rounds of 72, 74 and 72.
Sophomore Matt Vogt just missed the “Top 15” with a
final total of 220 (72-73-75), good for a tie for 16th place, while
junior Alex Walker tied for 35th at 226 (73-74-79).
Also competing for the Bulldogs were juniors Jordan Mack and Ben
Nichele and freshman Parker Sheppard, all playing as non-scoring
individuals. Mack tied for 23rd at 223 (73-74-76), Nichele
tied for 29th at 225 (74-75-76) and Sheppard came in 57th with a
final score of 239 (82-77-80).
IUPUI finished runner-up in the 11-team meet with a three-round
score of 861, while the Bulldogs finished at 870. The two
teams were tied for second heading into the final round.
Michael Sainz of Evansville put on a strong individual performance
to claim medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 12-under-par 201,
seven strokes better than teammate and runner-up Parker
Hensley. Sainz shot back-to-back rounds of five-under-par 66
and then finished with a two-under-par 69!
