Butler Men Place Fifth At Benbow Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- Junior Andrew Wegeng matched the second best round of the tournament and Butler surged in the final round to grab a fifth place team finish at the 13-team Don Benbow Invitational, which concluded at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Course in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday, March 13.
Wegeng, who shot a 76 on the first day of the 36-hole tournament, carded a three-under-par 68 in the final round to claim sixth place in the final individual standings. His final round total was topped only by Gino Parrodi of Eastern Illinois, who shot a 67 on the final day. Wegeng's 36-hole total of 144 was just four stokes shy of medalist James Glenn of team runner-up Sam Houston State.
Freshman Andrew Eiler, Butler's first-round individual leader with a 74, shot a 76 in the final round and tied for 26th with a two-day total of 150. Senior Alex Walker tied for 38th with rounds of 77 and 75 (152), while senior Jordan Mack tied for 45th with a score of 154 (79-75). Junior Colin Reenan, who improved 14 strokes on the final day, rounded out Butler's scoring team with a 158 (86-72) and a tie for 64th place.
Junior Matt Vitale, playing as a non-scoring individual, tied for 60th place with rounds of 82 and 75 (157).
Butler shot a team score of 306 in the first round, before coming back with a 290 on the final day. The Bulldogs' 36-hole total of 596 was seven strokes behind Evansville and Green Bay in a tie for third place in the final team standings. IUPUI captured the team title with a two-day score of 575.
