Bulldogs Place Tenth At Yestingsmeier Invitational
MUNCIE, IND. -- Junior Andrew Wegeng (right) finished among the top individuals in the tournament and Butler placed 10th in the team competition at the 2012 Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, which concluded at Delaware Country Club on Sunday, April 22. The Bulldogs were one of 15 teams in the 54-hole tournament hosted by Ball State.
Wegeng was in the hunt for individual honors right up until the closing holes of the tournament. He shot a two-over-par 72 in the opening round and then carded a three-over-par 73 in the second round. The Butler scoring leader closed with an even-par 70 for a three-round total of 215. He placed sixth overall, just one stroke shy of a "Top 5" finish and just five strokes behind medalist Chris Malec of team champ Louisville.
Senior Alex Walker missed a "Top 10" finish by two strokes and wound up tied for 11th in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 221. He shot a 77 in the first round, a team-best, four-under-par 66 in the second round and a 78 in the final round. His 66 narrowly missed the Butler single round (par 70) record held by Wegeng (2011).
Senior Jordan Mack and junior Colin Reenan tied for 65th with three-round scores of 236. Mack shot rounds of 79, 75 and 82, while Reenan came in with rounds of 80, 78 and 78. Freshman Andrew Eiler tied for 74th with a 238 (81-80-77), and junior Matt Vitale tied for 84th at 246 (80-85-81).
The Bulldogs shot a 338 in the opening round, a 372 in the second round and a 384 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 1144. Butler finished two strokes behind Youngstown State in ninth place.
The tournament was Butler's final tune-up prior to the Horizon League Championship, which begins April 27 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
