Senior Kevin Sasena posted a top five individual finish and helped lead Butler to a third place team finish at the 13-team Detroit Titans Invitational, which wrapped up at Golden Fox Country Club in Plymouth, Mich., on Saturday, April 18. The Bulldogs finished just two strokes out of second place and nine strokes behind team champ Loyola College.
Sasena carded a 54-hole total of 222 to tie for fifth in the final individual standings. He shot an even-par 72 in the opening round, and then carded a 77 in the second round. Sasena finished with a one-over-par 73 in the final round to tie with Nathan Peck of St. Bonaventure for the No. 5 spot.
Butler had two other golfers place in the "Top 20" in the tournament. Senior Elliot Retzlaff and junior Kyle Thomas both finished with a 54-hole total of 228 to tie for 19th place. Retzlaff posted rounds of 80, 75 and 73, while Thomas came in with scores of 75, 75 and 78.
Freshman Jordan Mack also posted three sub-80 rounds and finished in a tie for 30th with a final total of 230 (77-77-76), while freshman Alex Walker tied for 41st with a final score of 235 (75-78-82).
Loyola won the tournament with a three-round total of 894, seven
strokes better than Dayton. The Bulldogs shot round of 299, 304 and
300 to finish at 903. David Byrne of host Detroit captured medalist
honor with a 54-hole score of 214 (73-72-69).
