Junior Kyle Thomas put on a strong closing run and claimed third place in the final individual standings at the 2009 Horizon League Men's Golf Championship held at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., on Monday and Tuesday, April 27-28. The Bulldogs wound up sixth in the final team standings.
Thomas, who shot a 78 in the opening round, had the tournament's best single round score with a five-under-par 67 in the second round. He then finished with a one-over-par 73 to post a final score of two-over-par 218. He finished one stroke behind runner-up Charlie Doll of Wright Stat and six strokes behind medalist Jake Scott of Cleveland State.
The third place finish gave Thomas a spot on the seven-player All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year. He also was named to the seven-player 2009 All-Horizon League Team, becoming Butler's first all-league performer since 2004.
Senior Kevin Sasena also notched a "Top 10" individual finish with a 54-hole score of 225. He carded rounds of 79, 74 and even-par 72 to finish in a tie with Jeff Clarridge of Detroit and Brady Mork of Green Bay for tenth place.
Rounding out Butler's five-player squad were senior Elliot Retzlaff and freshmen Jordan Mack and Alex Walker. The trio all tied for 29th place with three-round scores of 237. Retzlaff shot rounds of 77, 83 and 77, while Mack came in with scores of 80, 82 and 75. Walker posted rounds of 79, 82 and 76.
Cleveland State (887) came from three strokes down on the final day to claim the team title over second round leader Detroit (892). Green Bay (893) finished third, one stroke back, followed by Loyola (908), Wright State (911), Butler (914) and Youngstown State (924).
