Senior Elliot Retzlaff tied for eighth place in the individual competition and Butler wound up 10th in the team standings at the rain-shortened Fairway Club Invitational men's golf tournament, hosted by Nebraska on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 8-9. The 12-team tournament at ArborLinks Golf Course was originally scheduled for 54-holes but was reduced to a 36-hole event after heavy rains on Monday.
Retzlaff was tied for fifth in the individual standings after shooting an opening round even par 72 on Monday. He slipped to a three-over-par 75 in the final round and wound up tied with Armen Kirakossian of Texas-Pan American, Tommy Bliefnick of Illinois State, Max Hosking of Northern Illinois and Tim Kalil of South Dakota State for the No. 8 spot.
Junior Kyle Thomas finished second for the Bulldogs and tied for 33rd overall with rounds of 75 and 77 (+8 152), while junior Kevin Sasena came in third for the team and tied for 43rd overall at +11 155 (77-78). Junior Kevin Swanson tied for 64th place with rounds of 83 and 84 (+23 167) and newcomer Alex Snyder placed 68th at +28 172 (83-89).
Shane Pearce of Texas-Pan American won individual medalist honors with a five-under-par 139 (68-71).
South Dakota State captured the tournament title with a 36-hole score of 580, while Western Illinois was runner-up at 582. The Bulldogs carded a 307 in the opening round and closed with a 314 for a two-day total of 621.
