Butler Ties For Ninth At John Piper Intercollegiate

Junior Kevin Sasena and sophomore Kyle Thomas tied for 20th in the final individual standings and helped Butler to a tie for ninth in the final team race at the John Piper Intercollegiate men's golf tournament, hosted by Bowling Green Sept. 10-11. Eastern Kentucky won the 15-team tournament held at Stone Ridge Golf Course.

Sasena and Thomas both shot 54-hole totals of seven-over-par 223 to tie with Chad Walker and Bryan Mitchell of host Bowling Green in the individual competition. Sasena carded rounds of 74, even-par 72 and 77 for his three-round total, while Thomas posted scores of 75, even-par 72 and 76.

Senior Abe Mulvihill finished three strokes back in a tie for 31st place with scores of 76, 76 and 74 (226). Sophomore Kevin Swanson tied for 57th place with rounds of 80, 76 and 76 (232), while freshman John Farrelly tied for 68th with scores of 76, 80 and 81.

Butler opened the tournament with a team score of 301, before shooting a 296 in the second round. The Bulldogs finished with a 303 for a 54-hole score of 900. Eastern Kentucky pulled away from the field with a final score of 844, 14 strokes ahead of runner-up Bowling Green.
