Senior Kevin Sasena shot a 12-over-par 222 and junior Kyle Thomas finished with a 223 to pace Butler at the 54-hole Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, hosted by Ball State at Delaware Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22-23. The Bulldogs wound up 11th in the final team standings.
Sasena opened the tournament with a two-over-par 72, before shooting a 76 in the second round. He closed with a four-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for 32nd place in the final indivdual standings.
Thomas came in one stroke behind Sasena and tied for 38th place. He carded rounds of 76 and 79 in the first two rounds, before turning in the Bulldogs' best round of the tournament with a two-under-par 68 in the final round. His closing effort matched the best final round score of the meet.
Rounding out Butler's scoring team were senior Elliott Retzlaff, who tied for 44th (224, 75-75-74), freshman Josh Ruff, who tied for 61st (233, 75-78-80) and freshman Ben Nichele, who placed 64th (238, 81-76-81). Sophomore Ryan Wegeng, playing as a non-scoring individual, tied Thomas for 38th place with a three-round score of 223 (77-72-74).
Eastern Kentucky won the tournament with a 54-hole score of 857, nine strokes better than runner-up Ball State. Jesse Massie of Eastern Kentucky claimed medalist honors with a five-under-par 205.
