Butler entered the final day of competition at the Cleveland State Invitational men's golf tournament in ninth place, but slipped two spots and wound up 11th in the 54-hole tournament held at Sand Ridge Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 29-30. South Dakota State shot a six-over-par 870 to win the 14-team tournament.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a team score of 301 and stood just five strokes out of fifth place. But several teams caught fire in the second round, while the Bulldogs posted another 301. A closing round 308 left Butler with a 54-hole score of 910, two strokes behind Wright State in tenth place.
Senior Kevin Sasena paced the Bulldogs with a three-round score of 225 (76-72-77) and a tie for 24th place in the final individual standings. Junior Kyle Thomas tied for 39th with a final score of 229 (72-74-83), while freshman Jordan Mack tied for 48th at 231 (78-77-76). Sophomore John Farrelly tied for 55th with a score of 232 (76-78-78) and sophomore Ryan Wegeng came in 61st at 235 (77-81-77).
Freshman Elliot Bloom, playing as a non-scoring individual, placed 74th with a 54-hole total of 261 (84-86-91).
Geoff Mead of South Dakota State carded a three-round score of four-under-par 212 (73-68-71) to capture medalist honors.
