Sept. 19, 2001
GOLF PLUS: Butler's men's golf squad will end a 10-day layoff and begin into its busiest stretch of the season when it travels to nearby Yorktown this weekend to compete in the Ball State Invitational. That tournament will signal the start of a virtual golf marathon for the Bulldogs, who face 90 holes of play in a four-day period. The 36-hole Ball State Invitational will be played at The Players Club on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23. The Bulldogs then will return to Indianapolis to host the 54-hole Butler Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24-25. Butler's tournament will be played at Eagle Creek Golf Course.
HOT START: The Bulldogs followed their season-opening victory at the Indianapolis Invitational with a runner-up finish at the Detroit Titan Invitational. Butler shook off a slow start and shot the best final round of the 11-team tournament to climb from fourth place to second place. The Bulldogs finished four strokes behind tournament champ UW-Green Bay and one stroke ahead of third place Detroit.
TOP DOGS: Sophomore Jonathan Novak (Mt. Prospect, Ill.), who was not part of Butler's scoring team for the tournament, finished runner-up at the Detroit Invitational with a five-under-par score of 210. Novak shot a career-best 67 in the second round of the meet and then closed with a one-under-par 71. Also placing among the "Top 5" individuals in the tournament was Butler sophomore Colin Christie (Indianapolis), who posted a three-under-par 213. Junior Jeff Chapman (Noblesville) tied for sixth at the Detroit Tournament with a two-under-par 214.
