Feb. 26, 2005
Freshman Jason Donati scored four goals Saturday, but No. 20 Hobart College was able to control face-offs and took an 11-7 win in a neutral site game played at St. Paul's School in Brooklandville, Md. Freshman Cliff Smith found the net two times as well Saturday, matching his performance in the season opener last week. The game was the first of the 2005 season for Hobart, while Butler falls to 0-2 on the year.
Butler's freshmen got the team on the board first, as Smith scored off a Kyle Tietjen assist less than two minutes into the game. Donati followed three minutes later to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage at the 9:57 mark in the first period. Hobart responded with eight consecutive goals, taking an 8-2 lead before Donati stopped the run with his second goal at the 5:28 mark in the second quarter. Each team would score once more before the half, as Hobart took a 9-4 advantage into the intermission. Donati had three first-half scores.
After giving up two goals in the opening 2:13 of the second half, Butler held Hobart scoreless the rest of the way. Smith and Donati scored goals in the third quarter and junior Phil Brauch scored with 14:10 to play. Neither team would score again.
Tietjen had two assists on the day, helping out Donati on the first goal of the game and Brauch's goal to end the scoring. Senior Anthony Crimmins and freshman Nick Vosburgh also had assists. Ryan Kaiser got the start in goal for the Bulldogs and took the loss. He combined with Sam Ashley to make 22 saves.
Hobart was able to win 16 of 22 face-offs and had 52 shots to the Bulldogs' 34. The teams combined for just five penalties and Butler was the only team to take advantage of the extra-man. Smith's goal at 9:32 of the third quarter was on an extra-man opportunity. Hobart had a 49-28 lead in ground balls.
Chris David and Nate Molinari each had three goals for Hobart, while Sean Murphy and Patrick Meade each found the net twice. Dan Valente got the win for Hobart, making 19 saves.
