No. 19 Towson Tops Butler, 16-7
March 15, 2006
Seven consecutive goals midway through the first half broke a 2-2 tie and lifted No. 19 Towson to a 16-7 win over Butler Wednesday under the lights at Unitas Stadium in Maryland. Sophomore Cliff Smith had three goals for the Bulldogs, who fall to 1-4 on the season. The Tigers improve to 2-2.
Down two goals at the 9:24 mark of the first period, Butler responded with goals from Adam Wade and Dan McLoughlin to knot the game at two. Freshman Jeremy Sieverts assisted on both tallies. Towson scored the final goal of the first period and then the first six scores of the second quarter to take a 9-2 lead it would not relinquish.
Smith scored the next three Butler goals before Sieverts and Wade rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs. Smith fired a team-high seven shots, while Sieverts and Wade each had five shots. The trio combined for 17 of the team's 22 shots.
Bobby Griebe scored four goals and had three assists for Towson after sitting out the Tigers' loss to Binghamton with an ankle injury in the team's last outing. Matt Eckerl controlled the game for Towson, winning 14-of-18 face-offs and collecting 12 ground balls. Mark DeGroat and Matt Antol each played 30 minutes in net for the Tigers, combining for three saves.
Towson won 17 of 24 face-offs and enjoyed advantages of 35-22 in shots and 47-22 in groundballs.
Junior Carlos Navarro had five ground balls for Butler. Classmate Ryan Kaiser made 10 saves, but took the loss for the Bulldogs.
The game was a homecoming of sorts for second-year Butler coach Stan Ross. He served as the top assistant to Tony Seaman on the Towson staff for six seasons before becoming the head man at Butler in 2005.
The Bulldogs continue their Spring Break travels, heading to No. 11 Delaware Saturday for a 1 p.m. face-off against the Blue Hens.
