Vosburgh Scores Five Goals, But Bulldogs Fall 11-8 to Air Force

Freshman Nick Vosburgh scored a career-high five goals Friday afternoon, but host Air Force used a strong second-half effort to take an 11-8 win in a Great Western Lacrosse League contest. Butler took a 5-4 advantage into the half, but was out-scored 4-0 in the third period as the Falcons improve to 4-6 (1-2 GWLL), while the Bulldogs fall to 4-6 (0-3).
The game was tied at eight after Vosburgh scored his fifth goal of the game with 8:46 to play. The goal was the third consecutive tally for the Bulldogs, who saw their 4-0 and 5-4 leads erased by four unanswered Falcon scores in the third period. Butler's goals by Pat Hurto, Phil Brauch and Vosburgh tied the game.
The Falcons closed the game with three goals over the final 2:54 to take the win. John Smith led the Falcons with three goals. Justin Kuchta had a game-high 12 ground balls. Air Force held a 37-33 advantage in ground balls and out-shot the Bulldogs, 39-27. The teams split 22 face-offs.
Air Force capitalized on its extra-man opportunities, converting three of the four situations. Justin Pavoni took the win with 11 saves for the Falcons.
Junior Gary Gambarani had a team-high 10 ground balls for the Bulldogs. Senior Sam Ashley went the distance in net for the Bulldogs, making seven saves. Kyle Tietjen had a goal and three assists.
The Bulldogs remain in Colorado for a Sunday noon (MT) GWLL face-off against Denver.
