Butler Lacrosse Team Gets First Taste Of The Season At Duke

Feb. 17, 2003

DURHAM, N.C. - The Butler lacrosse team wrapped up a busy weekend as the Bulldogs battled it out against No. 7 Duke and Hampdan Sydney on Saturday (Feb. 15) in Durham, N.C. The Bulldogs took on the host Blue Devils in the morning and then Hampden Sydney, a Division III school out of Virginia, in the afternoon session. No official scores were kept.

"I can't think of a better way to figure out where your program stands going into the season than to scrimmage a quality program like Duke," said head coach Craig Kahoun. "For as little as we have practiced outside this season, I was really pleased with how we performed over the weekend."

"Offensively, we did a great job possessing the ball," Kahoun noted. "We had several great scoring opportunities, but we just need to work on finishing better. Ryan Ward, Rich Pavlick and Brian Ronquillo all produced very well for us. We had solid play at the midfield - especially from freshman Alan Eberstein - but we need more production offensively from those guys.

"At close defense, Mike Marrapese and freshman Steve Forsythe had a solid days for us," added Kahoun. "Mike McDonnell, Chris McKay and Carlos Navarro each put forth quality effort on the one-on-one defensive end, as well as in the transition game in the long-stick positions."

Butler will travel to Baltimore, Md. to take on No. 25 Hobart on Sunday (Feb. 23) at 2:30 p.m in the teams' first battle of the season. The Bulldogs will then faceoff against VMI on Monday (Feb. 24) at 12:30 p.m.
