Ohio State Hands Butler First Setback
Chris Hegngi scored a pair of goals and led host Ohio State to a
2-1 victory over Butler in a non-league match at Jesse Owens
Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday (Sept. 18). The
loss was Butler’s first in five outings this fall.
Hegngi broke a scoreless deadlock just over 31 minutes into the match, slipping a shot past Butler goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler after taking a pass from Joshua Breto. It was the first goal allowed by Knopfler in three matches this season.
The goal was the only score of the first half. Both teams attempted three shots and both squads had two shots on goal.
Hegngi made it 2-0 with his third goal of the season at 58:05. He fired a shot from 10 yards out into the lower right hand corner of the net for the decisive goal. Breto and Dalton Summers picked up assists on the play.
Butler picked up the attack in the final 15 minutes and finally broke through with just under 10 minutes remaining. Junior Kyle Pateros tallied his first goal of the season with a header into the right side of the goal, after gathering a corner kick from senior Boris Gatzky.
Both teams finished with 10 shots on the night, and Butler had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. Pateros led the Bulldogs with five total shots and four shots on goal, while Gatzky added three shots and one shot on goal.
The Bulldogs will begin Horizon League play at home on Friday, Sept. 25, against Milwaukee. That match at the Butler Bowl is scheduled for 5 p.m. (ET).
