Butler Defeats #14 Indiana In Overtime
Junior Conner Burt scored his first goal of the
season in the second overtime period to lift visiting Butler to a
2-1 victory over #14 Indiana at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington on
Wednesday (Oct. 7). The win was just Butler’s second in
21 meetings with the Hoosiers.
Burt ended the match in the 104th minute with a header that eluded
Indiana goalkeeper Luis Soffner. The game-winning shot came
off a corner kick by Butler senior Boris Gatzky at
103:33. It gave the Bulldogs their first victory over Indiana
since 1995.
The Hoosiers (5-4-1) jumped out to an early lead on the Bulldogs
for the second straight year. Darren Yeagle took a pass from
Will Bruin and fired a shot past Butler goalkeeper Fabian
Knopfler just 3:19 into the match. It was the first
goal of the season for Yeagle.
That early goal stood for nearly 80 minutes, before a clutch goal
by freshman Tyler Pollock tied the match on a
rebound shot with less than eight minutes remaining. The
clutch goal was Pollock’s third of the season.
Indiana had the first good scoring attempt in overtime, but Alec
Purdie’s shot was stopped by Knopfler. That was the
last shot on goal by either team until Burt’s
game-winner.
Both teams had 15 shots in the match, with the Hoosiers holding a
slight edge, 5-3, in shots on goal. Knopfler, who improved to
3-1-1 on the season, finished with three saves, and the Bulldogs
had one team save. Gatzky led the Bulldogs with three shots
in the match.
Butler (7-1-1) returns to Horizon League action and continues its
road stretch with a match at Valparaiso on Sunday, Oct. 11.
