#9 Butler Slips Past Wright State
DAYTON, OHIO -- Senior Jacob Capito scored a
clutch goal with just over five minutes remaining in the match to
lift #9 Butler to a 2-1 Horizon League victory over host Wright
State in a match played at Alumni Field on Saturday (Oct. 16)
evening. The dramatic win kept Butler (12-0-0) as the
nation’s only unbeaten, untied team.
Both teams battled to a scoreless deadlock through 77
minutes. But the Bulldogs ended that tie at 77:15 on freshman
Adam Glanzer’s second career goal. Senior Conner Burt
picked up an assist on the score.
Wright State (4-8-1, 0-4-1 HL) came right back to tie the game
again on a goal by Justin Circle at 80:53. And the Raiders
appeared poised to take the lead when Carl Ebers fired a shot on
goal minutes later, but goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler made the save
for the Bulldogs.
That set the stage for Capito’s game-winner, the first of
his Butler career. It came off a corner kick by senior Ben
Sippola and eluded Wright State goalkeeper Corey Whisenhunt with
just 5:29 left in the match. It was Capito’s second
goal this season.
The Bulldogs held on through the final 5:29 and extended their
school-record winning streak to 12 straight matches. The win
lifted league-leading Butler’s Horizon League record to
5-0.
Butler finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots in the match and a
5-3 edge in shots on goal. Knopfler, who narrowly missed his
sixth shutout of the season, finished with a pair of saves.
The Bulldogs will return home and step out of League play with a
match against IUPUI on Wednesday, Oct. 20. That match at the
Butler Bowl will start at 4 p.m.
