VALPARAISO, Ind. - Butler got a much-needed point on the road Wednesday night, tying Valparaiso 1-1 at Brown Field. Freshman Zach Steinberger scored for the Bulldogs, who are battling for a spot in the Horizon League Men's Soccer Championship.
The tie clinched the regular season title for Valparaiso, which needed just one point to win the league outright. The Crusaders (9-5-4, 5-0-2) will host the six-team league tournament Nov. 11-13.
Valpo got out to an early lead when Guy Shabtay scored at 18:26. The goal, a left-footed blast from 30 yards out, was Shabtay's second of the season. The Crusaders held the lead for the rest of the first half as BU managed just two shot attempts in the period.
Steinberger's equalizing tally at 74:22 was started on a pass from Jared Isenthal. From the left flank, Steinberger buried a shot from eight yards out. It was Steinberger's fourth goal of the season. The Bulldogs had two shots on goal in the first overtime period, but Valpo's Kyle Zobeck stopped both tries.
Jon Dawson made four saves in his 110 minutes of work. Eight different Bulldogs attempted one shot each. Shabtay had four shots for Valpo. The match had 43 fouls (24 called on BU) and four yellow cards (2 on each team).
Butler (7-7-3, 2-3-2) will play Wright State Saturday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. in the season finale. BU is tied in the standings with Milwaukee, which plays UIC this weekend. The Milwaukee-UIC winner clinches a berth in the league tournament. Two of either Butler, Milwaukee or UIC will get into the tourney.
