Butler’s Season-Opener Ends In A Tie
RICHMOND, VA. -- Butler launched 16 shots, including seven on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net and had to settle for a 0-0 tie against William & Mary in the opening round of the VCU Nike Classic in Richmond, Va., on Friday (Aug. 24). The double-overtime match was the season-opener for both teams.
There was no shortage of attempts in the scoreless contest. The two teams combined for 33 shots and 12 of those attempts were on goal. Butler junior goalkeeper Jon Dawson recorded five saves, while going the distance for the Bulldogs. William & Mary goalkeeper Bennett Jones had seven saves.
The Bulldogs, paced by junior Austin Oldham and sophomore Brandon Fricke, out-shot William & Mary, 13-11, in regulation play, but the Tribe pressed the attack in the two overtime periods. William & Mary wound up launching six shots in the two extra sessions, and Dawson had two of his five saves in the extra sessions. The Butler goalkeeper stopped a shot by Marcus Luster three minutes into the first overtime period and then turned away the final shot on goal by the Tribe with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest.
Oldham led the Bulldogs with five total shots, including two shots on goal. Fricke had four shots, three of which were on target. Senior Tyler Pollock and freshman Caleb Postlewait had Butler's other two shots on goal.
The Bulldogs will wrap up play in the VCU Tournament on Sunday, August 26, with a 1 p.m. (ET) match against Bucknell.
