Butler Begins Atlantic 10 Conference Play

LEAGUE OPENER:  Butler will continue a three-match road stretch in Ohio and begin Atlantic 10 Conference play when it visits Dayton on Friday, Oct. 5.  The 7 p.m. (ET) match will be played at Dayton's Baujan Field.  The Bulldogs will conclude their Ohio journey with a conference match at Xavier on Sunday, Oct. 7.  Butler's opening weekend in the A-10 promises to be challenging.  The Flyers (6-2-0) were ranked No. 20 by Soccer America a week ago, and they enter this week's action with a No. 30 national ranking in the Top Drawer Soccer Tournament 48.  Dayton won six of its first seven matches this season, before dropping a 1-0 decision at No. 25 Southern Illinois Edwardsville in its last outing.  The Flyers are 5-0 at Baujan Field this year.  Xavier, ranked No. 17 in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25, currently leads the A-10 with a 7-0-2 record.  The Musketeers, also unbeaten at home, defeated Thomas More, 5-0, in their last outing.  The Butler-Xavier match will start at 1 p.m. (ET) at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.             

Butler was picked seventh in the preseason poll of Atlantic 10 Conference coaches.
      
PREVIOUSLY:  Butler, facing Dayton for the first time since 2007, is 3-6-0 all-time against the Flyers.  Dayton won the last meeting between the two teams, 3-2, at Butler, but the Bulldogs prevailed in their last visit to Baujan Field, 2-0, in 2006.  The two teams have split their last four meetings.  Butler is 2-1 in three previous trips to Dayton.  The Bulldogs are 8-3-0 all-time against Xavier, including a 1-0 victory in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the last meeting in 2010.  Butler is 3-1 in matches played at Xavier.

NATIONAL COMPETITION:  Xavier will be the third "Top 20" team Butler has faced already this season.  The Bulldogs battled to a 2-2 tie against #11 South Florida in the first round of the Akron Tournament, Sept. 14-16.  Two days later, the Bulldogs tied #10 St. John's, 1-1, in the final round of the four-team meet.  Butler placed runner-up at the Akron Tournament, which featured three of the nation's top 11 teams.

LAST OUTING:  Senior Austin McAnena scored three goals and helped power host Ohio State to a 4-1 victory over Butler in the final pre-conference match for the Bulldogs on Wednesday, Sept. 26.  The setback snapped a three-match unbeaten streak for head coach Paul Snape's squad.  McAnena scored the first two goals of the match, before the Bulldogs cut the margin in half on a penalty kick by freshman Caleb Postlewait.  But McAnena followed with his third goal and teammate Sage Gardner added a fourth to settle the outcome.  The four goals were the most allowed by the Bulldogs this season.  Butler had given up just six goals in the first seven matches of the season.  

BULLDOG BITS:  Butler goalkeeper Jon Dawson is tied for third in the Atlantic 10 Conference in shutouts (3).  Dawson is tied for ninth in the league in saves (32)..The penalty kick by Caleb Postlewait at Ohio State was his first collegiate goal.  Postlewait had four shots through Butler's first seven matches this season...Junior Austin Oldham and freshman Jeff Adkins continue to lead the Bulldogs in shots on goal (10).  Adkins leads the team in shots (23), while Oldham is second on the squad...Junior Adam Glanzer is tied for sixth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in goals per game (0.50)...Butler ranks fifth in the A-10 in shots per game (15.38).  Xavier and VCU are tied for first (18.00), while Dayton stands third (17.00).  Charlotte is fourth (16.44).
