Goldsmith’s Hat Trick Leads Bulldogs Past HBU
David Goldsmith

Freshman David Goldsmith, a native of Bristol, England, scored three goals in a 4-1 Butler victory over Houston Baptist Monday night at the Butler Bowl.

"David came to the rescue with the hat trick tonight," head coach Paul Snape said. "A goal scorer wants to score and he was there at the right time."

Goldsmith's goals came in the 11th, 50th and 89th minutes. The last Butler player to post a hat trick was Ben Sippola on September 10, 2010, also against Houston Baptist. Sippola recorded his hat trick almost three years to the day of Goldsmith's.

Houston Baptist out-shot Butler 19-14 in the match, but Bulldog goalkeeper Jon Dawson, who picked up his second win of the season, was able to hold them to only one goal, a strike from Tobenna Uzo  that went in the left side of the goal in the 64th minute.

Sophomore Zach Steinberger scored the other Butler goal of the match when he converted on a penalty kick in the 89th minute.

Sophomores Jeff Adkins and Vincent Mitchell and senior Adam Glanzer all assisted on a Goldsmith goal in the match.

"We brought him over to score goals and assists and that's what he did tonight," Snape said.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-0-1 on the season. They next take to the road for a tournament at Northern Illinois University on September 13 and 15. They return home to host Brown on September 22 at 1 p.m. at the Butler Bowl.
