Bulldogs Blank Northern Illinois
DeKALB, ILL. -- Freshman Anthony Smith Jr. came up with his second game-winner in five matches to help lead Butler to a 1-0 victory over host Northern Illinois in the first round of the NIU adidas Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13. The tournament win lifted the unbeaten Bulldogs to 4-0-1 on the young season.
Smith, who's quickly establishing a reputation as a "clutch" performer, gave the Bulldogs all the scoring they needed in the 35th minute of the contest. The first-year forward took a pass from teammate Zach Steinberger and beat Northern Illinois goalkeeper Andrew Glaeser with a shot to the left side of the net. It was Smith's second goal of the season, following the game-winner he notched in Butler's 1-0 victory over #7 Louisville.
The single score was more than enough for Butler's defense, which weathered seven shots from the host Huskies. Northern Illinois (1-4) only had two shots in the first period, but out-shot the Bulldogs, 5-4, in the final 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Jon Dawson went the distance in net for the Bulldogs and recorded a pair of saves. He picked up his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his Butler career.
Butler finished the evening with nine shots, led by sophomore Jeff Adkins with three. The Bulldogs had three shots on goal.
The four-team tournament will continue on Sunday, Sept. 15, with a pair of matches. The Bulldogs will face #24 Northwestern at noon, followed by a match between Northern Illinois and Green Bay.
