David Goldsmith Earns BIG EAST Honor
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Freshman David Goldsmith turned in one of Butler's best individual performances in recent years, and his effort earned him BIG EAST Rookie of the Week recognition. His award, which was announced by the conference office on Monday (Sept. 16), came one week after teammate Anthony Smith Jr. earned the same honor.
Goldsmith scored three goals in Butler's 4-1 victory at home over Houston Baptist on Monday, Sept. 9. He scored just over 11 minutes into the match to give Butler a 1-0 halftime lead and then tallied his second goal and the eventual game-winner just over five minutes into the final period. He scored his final goal in the final minute of the contest.
The Bristol, England, native became the first Butler player to score three goals in a match since Sept. 10, 2010, when Ben Sippola turned the feat. Ironically, Sippola also posted his three-goal performance against Houston Baptist, three years and one day earlier.
Goldsmith is currently tied for fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring (7 points) and tied for third in the conference in goals (3).
Butler (4-1-1) will be in action at home on Sunday, Sept. 22, against Brown. That match at the Butler Bowl is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (ET).
